She's Here!!

Jake dropped me off at the ER at 6:30 tonight. I waddled myself in, laughing to myself thinking...am I really in labor?! I mouthed to the ER lady at the desk, that my water broke. As soon as she realized what was going on, panic mode set in! They frantically asked me what baby this was and when I replied #4...more panic set in! They set me on the wheel chair and a tech came in and wheel me to the triage room. Jake was parking the car and came in shortly after. They had me change out of my clothes (I really wished I had taken a picture!!) and into a gown. I was dying! I was laughing so hard! My clothes were soaked and getting them off and trying to not get water everywhere was impossible! I threw all my clothes in a bag and put the gown on. Jake still wasn't convinced that my water broke. I think we were both in denial! After a few minutes of being in the triage room, they wheeled me up to the labor and delivery room.  At this point, I was only dilated to a 2cm. Betsy was my cute nurse in the triage room. My mom and dad came and so did Beckee. Jaymie went to our house to stay with our other kids. She FaceTime'd with us! I was contracting on my own, but they wanted to get her here without issues so they gave me some pitocin to speed up the process. I knew I was going to have an epidural, I really didn't want one, but I knew I would panic if I didn't have one. The anesthesiologist came in and was trying to talk to me and to prepare me for one. Yuck. I have had four of them and have hated every single one. It's nice not to feel the pain, but I really hate them!

At 1:25 am, I was finally starting to dilate. I was now at a 5 cm. at about 1:45 am I could feel an intense pressure. They checked me again and said it was time! Although, we had to wait for the doctor! Seriously, trying not to push and wait was so hard! It hurt to not push! Dr. Burgett lives in our old neighborhood and it only takes a few minutes to get to the hospital, but it felt like an eternity! At 1:58 am he finally showed up and maybe ten pushes and she was out! She didn't cry. They had her nurse, Gillian (who was all business) and the respiratory nurse, Natalie, working on her. She weighed 5 lbs 7 oz and 19 in long. She was 36 weeks, which they thought her body looked more like 35 weeks and was considered premature.

At this time, I knew she was four weeks early. The Dr. explained that there was definitely going to be some issues because she was so early. He called her "premie". It felt weird calling her a premie. I was not prepared for that. I don't think I was fully aware of the issues Ashtyn was having.

They worked on her for quite a long time, trying to get her to breathe and get all the junk out of her lungs. They told me that they were going to take her up to the NICU and there could be a possibility of transferring her to another hospital. That was the last thing I wanted, but I wanted her to be ok.

I asked if I could hold her before they took her up. They let me hold her for just a few minutes and then she was gone...

She's doing awesome!!!  She's down to a level 3, they are putting an ng tube to start feeding her right now. She's holding her own body temp too. No grunting. They will drop her to a two at noon and hopefully if her respiratory rate is lower than a 60, then we can start to bottle feed. She's definitely making progress

7:00pm she is off oxygen!! Learning how to "suck swallow, breathe"
